PROBLEM-SOLVING GROUP FOR STUDENTS WITH PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS
  • Begins Monday, February 7, 12:10 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

This informal lunch group will inform students about accommodations, and campus and community resources. Feel free to drop in during group time.

PROBLEM-SOLVING GROUP FOR STUDENTS WITH CHRONIC ILLNESS OR PAIN.
  • Organizational meeting Wednesday, February 2. Day and time may change.

This drop-in group offers a relaxing and safe space for support, sharing of information, coping strategies, generating ideas on improving campus access, possible discussion of readings, and anything else that comes up. There will be space to lie down.

PROBLEM-SOLVING GROUP FOR STUDENTS WHO USE ATTENDANTS.
  • Begins Wednesday, February 2, at noon.

Share information and insights on ways to hire and supervise attendants. Topics include: IHSS, keeping timesheets, maintaining proper documentation, and organizing paperwork.

PROBLEM-SOLVING GROUP FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES
  • Begins Thursday, February 3, noon - 1 p.m.

This drop-in group meets noon-1 p.m. on Thursdays for the entire semester. Bring your lunch. It's not necessary to attend every session; come when you can. Topics will include: using DSP services; on- and off-campus resources for students with learning disabilities; communicating with others about your disability; assertively asking for what you need; and interactions with instructors.

This drop-in group meets at 4 p.m.on Thursdays for the entire semester. Come when you can. Learn more about Attention Deficit Disorder and its effect on college students; share ideas, inspirations, problems, and solutions.

FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOP
  • Thursday, February 3, at 4:00 p.m., 230 Chávez Student Center.

In this special workshop for students with disabilities, Ben Arbib of the Financial Aid Office will show students how to complete the 2000-2001 FAFSA (due March 2) and use FAFSA on the Web.

FINANCIAL RESOURCES & NEGOTIATING WITH THE BUREAUCRACIES
  • Thursday, February 17, 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

A round-table discussion and resource-sharing led by Janet Rachel. Participants will discuss a variety of financial assistance programs for people with disabilities. Student financial aid and scholarship programs will be explored, and tips will be offered on self-advocacy and navigating the bureaucratic maze.

WHAT'S MY LEARNING STYLE? HOW CAN I LEARN MORE EFFICIENTLY?
  • Thursday, February 17, 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

One-session workshop for students with learning disabilities and/or ADD. Each student will receive an individualized assessment of learning strengths and weaknesses, together with suggestions for improving learning skills. Students will be able to do follow-through from self-assessment forms. Pre-enroll at least one week before the workshop.

HOW TO WRITE CLEAR, WELL-ORGANIZED ESSAYS
  • Wednesday, February 16, 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

This workshop will begin with a general session describing effective writing strategies for students with disabilities of various kinds. Each student will schedule an individual session in which to practice these strategies with the workshop facilitator

DRAGON NATURALLY-SPEAKING™ FOR STUDENTS WITH LD OR ADD
  • Wednesday, February 23, 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

This workshop will center on ways that voice-recognition software can alleviate some of the writing problems encountered by students with LD or ADD. There will be a demonstration of the software.

IMPROVING READING AND NOTE-TAKING EFFICIENCY

Workshop begins with a discussion of how learning disabilities and ADD can affect reading and note-taking. Effective reading and note-taking strategies for textbooks and other printed materials will be demonstrated.
